S’Estol des Gerricó is a cultural association from Felanitx that since 1964 has devoted itself to the study of Majorcan popular culture and sharing what we learn through parties involving dancing, music, musical instruments and traditional costumes.
As a dancing band it is famous not only in Majorca and the rest of the Balearics but also throughout all of Spain, where it has been invited to perform at festivals and workshops and schools in Galicia, Castilla, Catalonia, Aragon, Asturias, Valencia, Murcia, Andalusia and Extremadura. We have also played internationally in Argentinia, Yugoslavia, Tunisia, France and we were proud to take part in the XXXVI Summer Catalan University in Prada de Conflent.
We have taken part in many radio and television programmes in the Balearics and in other Spain regions and other countries, including; Radio Balear, Ona Mallorca, IB3 radio, “Gente Joven” in TVE1, the TV series “Punt de Ball”, New Years’ Eve channel 13 in Argentinia, Canal 4, Palma TV or TV Felanitxera.
It is member of the FEAF, a federation of folk groups from around Spain, recognized at international level by UNESCO, and a member of the Music and Majorcan Dancing Federation. It has released three records; the first one, an LP in 1979 and two CDs: s’Estol, Felanitx i Mallorca in 1995, and s’Estol: Nou de Trinca in 2004 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the group. It has also collaborated in various recordings of traditional music in other regions in Spain.

We are always active in local festivals, leading the traditional dances on Felanitx’s biggest festivals: Santa Margalida’s Day and Sant Augusti’s Eve. We also organise the animal blessings at the Sant Antoni Festival, the nativity contests and the traditional dances on Sant Joan Pelós and the Cavallets. We feel this work is integral in maintaining our rich heritage for the next generations to enjoy.
Amongst our repertoire there are the jotes, boleros, fandangos, mateixes, and popular songs from Majorca. We have to mention the research done to recover the dances and music of the fandango and the great success of the Mateixa Felanitxera. Most of our repertoire comes from popular, tarditional music but we also include music written by our members. We are proud that our latest CD was written entirely by the group.
There are a wide rage of different instruments: the guitar, the guitarró (a kind of small guitar), the castanets, the ximbomba, the culleres, etc. Sometimes the band is accompanied by a couple of xeremiers (bagpipers) who play the tamborino, the flute and the bigpipe.
The traditional costume is another aspect of research conducted by the band. We are zealous collectors of original costumes from different periods and other accessories such as jewelery.
Some years ago the band joined the traditional Majorcan circuit that the Consell de Mallorca and Sa Nostra organise.
The band offers folk dances (with the traditional Majorcan costume), open traditional dances, concerts and workshops on traditional culture.
